Not even the late night endorphins can get VETS over the line…

And so it seems, Spring has almost sprung. There was a lot of talk about endorphins on Monday night, with Liesl declaring that the late hour meant she may even release some during the game! (If you’re looking for a research topic, ask her about the correlation between Maths B and stress release…)The late hour and frisky weather was certainly playing havoc with our usual game plan; like a young man preparing to release endorphins for the first time, we missed the spot as often as the Altona back line prematurely broke. (Another confession about not knowing the rules – the umpire told them they were on their last warning – what happens then?? Does he say, “Don’t break again …or… or… or I’ll tell you not to break again.”?) Anyway, a nil all draw was as much as we could muster at an hour when we should have all been home having a nip of sherry in bed (or doing whatever Liesl does as an after match warm down).

Man! – the match was pretty ugly really. I’m thinking though that it’s the pre-finals slump you have to have, to remind yourselves that it’s not all wine and roses, even with the likes of Tina tearing up left side, Felicity holding strong in the backline with Barb and George spurred on by the appearance of George’s boiled lollies, with Gil keeping them scoreless as always, Daws non-stop pushing forward and making excellent position at the top of the D, Dale, Libby, Ros, and she who shall not be named all hugging the posts, Lisa running as much as anyone despite failing achillies, and Ardie, well, hang on, I think Ardie was already mentally in Tuscany having a vino and pizza….. We’ll miss you Ardie!!

And so, as the Season finalé draws near, are we now discovering the true meaning of Veterans? – is it that no one can make it to the end Season without completely crumbling with injury?? I’m seeing a bulk booking for hips, knees and achillies in October – Ros, get onto a good surgeon for us could you??

Another research topic for someone who wants to take on a task – why, as Felicity noted, do the hockey endorphins prevent you from going to sleep after the match, whereas those other endorphins (or ‘the dolphins’ as I’ve heard them called), send you to slumber straight away?? Hmm….
