State League 2 v Footscray
Round 10 vs Footscray (3-1)
The firsts girls were about the 10th Kew game in a row on a well attended family day. This meant that we had our largest crowd for the season, and a lot of them were good looking boys. Ideal conditions for our young team to perform. We met Footscray, who are fighting to avoid relegation. Bottom of the ladder…a Kew danger game!Kew went out hard and had many scoring opportunities. Finally, through some skillful play by Sarah Evans, a ball was crossed and a deflection scored… top net!
We held this lead only momentarily, and Footscray themselves scored from a deflection. Into half time we went thinking how on earth we could shake the curse of the dreaded draw.
Kew, with weary bodies (hey Lisa!), fought on. Bec Gale got the softest green card for years but maybe that fired the team up. We continued our forward penetrations and really, it was just a matter of time, before Footscray let one slip through. Again, Sarah Evans set up the play to pass a casual ball to Kirsten. She managed to score one of those goals from your nightmares…open goal and only a push required.
Their goalie went down. 12 minutes to go. We HAD to win. Our backs really didn’t look like they were going to let anyone past. Kat, Kim, Lucy and Katie all had magic games. It was our other defender, Captain Bob, who broke through the shackles and ran from the half line to find herself in the attacking circle with no one to pass to. Oh no. I will have to shoot. She smashed the ball, which bobbled over the line. Kew 3-1 up.
Congrats to Miling for her first game in the ones.
Goals: Ange- 1, Kirsten- 1, Brooke- 1
