Men’s PE v MCC (R2)
2009 Pennant E Round 2
Sunday 5pm start @ Melbourne High School v. MCC is not exactly the ideal fixture in the best of conditions, let alone when it is 8 degrees. Conditions to truly test the mettle of a cumber!
As the MCC boys pranced in with the Victorian Bags, NHL tracksuits and old SL1 uniforms, coupled with a former hockey show host to umpire they clearly thought the “grand old flag†would be flying high this cold winters night.
One of Kieren’s and Cracka’s instructions pre game were to retain possession of the ball at all costs. If we deprive MCC so called stars of the ball they cannot hurt us. That coupled with Jason (alias Mario) showing all and sundry is scar on his ankle was all the mighty fours needed to take to the pitch.
The first half was scrappy to say the least, with the Kew boys desperately trying to hang on to possession as MCC’s strength in the middle was clearly evident. The dead lock was broken by a DK thunderbolt into the top left backboard off a short corner. MCC equalised and score was locked in at 1-1 at half time.
The second half saw Kew not only have possession of the prized white pill but pass the ball around the back via Cracka, Kim, Kieren, Kim(whom was moved to CH) and DK. Thus allowing Dan, S Chang, Sean and Jez Bourke to make inroads up forward towards the brick wall end (named after Ken).
Great solo efforts from Dan (thankfully his flight was delayed to the UK) and Tommy C coupled with another short corner strike from DK gave the Cumber fours 4 goals. MCC managed a couple of late ones but to no avail.
Having Mario coaching from the sidelines was a huge advantage and made us professional!
Great keeping by Jules all game was great to see, many thanks to the loyal “Kew Chix coterie group†whom braved the horrid conditions and were rewarded by a great result.
Final Score: Kew 4 def MCC 3. Goals Scorers: David Kahanoff 2, Tom Clements 1, Dan Shardlow 1.
