Men’s Vets A v StK/Powerhouse (R2)
After a stellar round 1 where all three vets sides recorded wins round 2 saw mixed results.
The A grade vets buoyed by their 6 – 1 demolition of Geelong (which saw us on top of the ladder) were keen to take on the Heath’s sorry the combine of St.Kilda/Powerhouse.
In appalling conditions we made our way down to the cash strapped municipality of Albert Park, where else do they charge you to park at 8 o’clock at night!
The team welcomed Bill Allen for his debut vets match and he didn’t disappoint. The Kew boys played a good first half generating a number of scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalise on their dominance.
The team soothsayer Danny Lee warned us at 1/2 time about games where you dominate but don’t score and then the opposition, against the play, slot one in. True to his prediction the combine drew first blood.
The Kew boys persevered and after a number of near misses forced a stroke that was converted.
As the conditions deteriorated so did the umpiring as the Kew boys had a goal awarded and then disallowed because “about 10 of the opposition complained compared to only three or four of the Kew boys”, couldn’t quite work out the logic of the umpire’s reasoning who complains when you get a goal?
Kew continued to generate scoring opportunities but were unable to convert – the story of the night really. A good team effort with 13 contributors though Danny did remark it was the best game he had seen Joey play but couldn’t fit him in to the best three!
The Kew vets would also like to welcome Pete Dry who made his debut against Geelong last week. Pete adds to our impressive ranks of South Africans.
