Men’s Vets A v Southern (R3)

Having beaten Geelong, and outplayed and outwitted the horrible Heaths of St Kilda, it was time to see how good Vets A are going to be this year.  The Southern Unity were in the top four all last year and had taken every opportunity to let us know where we stood in the hockey world….

After a minute, Johnny Hearne had bought a Toyota and the drought looked to have broken. One nil before they had touched the ball. Unfortunately, it emerged that the Southerners were capable of some clever hockey, stretching our defence with some long hitting. The first deflection goal was followed by a corner and after that it got a bit blurry….

But that man Schwartz was on fire and an important goal just before half time meant 3-2 and gave us a sniff.  Danny Lee was then anxious to let his defenders know that he was interested in winning this game….

The defence tightened and held and then watched on as Schwartz, Lee and then Lurker Morrow found something extra to his get his goal, and us, over the line. 5 -3 up, a few celebratory sledges and we headed back to the Fortress for the barby. A good night at the hockey….   Â
