Men’s Vets C West v Brunswick (R3)
1-0 Loss
Â
This week saw the C West Vets come up against a slick Brunswick side. Armed with knowledge of their game through two pre-season games, we slightly changed our game plan to nullify their attack.
Â
The game opened with a near tsunami of attack against the KEW defensive line. It felt as though our defense was akin to the Greek Spartans facing certain death … but held we did!!    Â
Â
Going into the half time break with a Nil all score line was a win in itself. The team amazed by Charlie’s self control in the aftermath of an agricultural tackle foolishly applied to Charlie’s knee. The mood at half time was positive with a steely resolve to repeat the heroics of the first half.
Â
Early in the second half, with Brunswick’s mood changing to desperation, Charlie put the ball in the back of the Brunswick goal. Unfortunately the umpire also saw the footwork that even Beckham would have been proud of, so disallowed the goal.
Â
Eventually and somewhat against the play, Brunswick eventually scored their only goal. Rather than becoming disillusioned the boys pressed Brunswick’s defense and we had our chances to equalize.Â
Â
After the game we all agreed that without the heroics of our keeper John Hacker we would have been toast. The pressure of underperforming eventually told on Brunswick who with 2 minutes to go had two men off the field.
Â
If not a victory on the scoreboard this time, it surely was psychologically, and we look forward to our return game.
