Men’s PB v Southern (R4)
Result – Kew 2 – Southern United 1
Southern United missed out on promotion to PenA last season only as a result of a loss in the Grand Final. SU are the only team in PenB who are the seconds behind a SL1 team, and really should be one of the stronger teams in the competition this year. Their start to the season had not been ideal, having drawn one game and lost two, so they were certainly going to throw everything at Kew in the round 4 game played at Moorabbin.
A strong defensive performance in the first half ensured that the score was 0-0 at half time. The second half was played at a very high pace, and there were several good scoring opportunities to both teams. Southern grabbed the first goal following a Kew defensive error. Then Kew brought the scores level after quality play down the right side of the field involving Mulder and Lowden and finishing with deft touch from Doherty. A converted PC with 10 minutes to go saw Kew go 2 – 1 up. SU then attacked hard for the final period of the game to try to get a goal or two back. Superb circle defence and resilience under extreme pressure, lead ably by keeper Chuckey, allowed Kew to hold onto the lead. SU almost certainly will feel robbed of the points, considering the number of circle penetrations they generated, and the 12PCs they had against Kew’s 4. However, it was the commitment to composure by the Kew team and the ability to convert relatively limited opportunities that set the two teams apart.
Best Players: McMullin, Mulder, Lowden, O’Sullivan
Goals: Doherty (2)
Next game is against Yarra Valley, at Elgar Park on Sunday at 12:30.
