Women’s M2S v Camberwell (R5)
Kew 1 drew Camberwell 1
This week the Ladies turned up to play and it was a great match against tough opponent. Camberwell showed that they were worthy challenges with a couple of early fast breaks down both wings to spark our defence into action. Meters gained in attacked were hard earned by both teams, Kew’s drive off the halfline came through Steph, Anna & Jess N. They all run into plenty of opposition bodies as they looked to smoother Kew’s streaking runs when space became available. Unluckily after Ali made a fantastic save, Camberwell put through the first goal to finish the first half 1-0.
After a stirring motivation speech from Keamy to “lift, work hard, man up and score goals” (Coaching 101) the Ladies sparked into action (some how?) and started to get the upper edge. Breaking runs through the opposition from Leah, & the Jess’s started to test Camberwell’s defence setting up Donna & Kelly to test the keeper. As the second half continued, the energy started to drop and defence stood strong through persistent tackling by Mel P and Elishka while Mel H was picking off their pass beautifully across the half line. If that wasn’t enough to deter Camberwell then Ali would slide out to save the day.
By this time Anna & Jess W had enough of this defensive work and put their body’s on the line, well for Anna it was her right foot (twice). But Jess went for the footy bump approach as she charged into the D on a fast break and was confronted by a goalie and full back. Bounced of them and side stepped to find the ball sitting behind them to slot it home, 1-1. Jess wasn’t done with after her previous success at charging through the pack, she tried again, but in the next two visits to the D she got tripped in a tackle and run head first into the wrong woman. She is Okay, but we aren’t letting her have two weeks off again.
So after all that we muscled and fought to retain our unbeaten streak with a hard fought draw. 1-1.
