Men’s PB v Essendon (R6)

Kew Pen B Men’s – Round 6
Result – KEW 4 – ESS 3

Going into the round 6 match, Kew was second on the ladder and Essendon was 7th. But in no way would this be an easy game, after all, Essendon were playing at home…. at MUHC. A home game is a home game.

The team had a different feel this week with 2-3 of the younger crop unavailable for various reasons. But the guys that came in were more than capable of playing at this grade. Hugh Taggart and Ben Johnson provided an important experienced attitude to the team, particularly as Essendon had brought two very experienced players into their own line up to attempt to halt the slide towards the bottom of the table.

Early injuries to Lachie McKay and Matty Lumb meant that ‘super sub’ Barney Allen would be needed to rest players during the game. I understand this continues his record of having played at least one game of Kew 2nds every year for the last 20 years. James Tull down from the 1s this week added some class moving into the attacking areas. It was also good to have Ash Reid into the team after injury, however his high number of back stick shots at goal did not convince everybody at the ground that this should be his primary goal scoring choice.

After the game, the players retired to the Pub and had a players vote for ‘MVP’. Chuckey managed to scrape ahead of Johno, JC and Lumby in the count. I believe his stand out attribute during this game may have been circle enthusiasm.

Tough games are ahead of us, as we play against the teams 2nd and 3rd on the ladder in the next 2 rounds.

Best Players: Taggart, Johnson, Cameron, Lumb

Goals: Alderman, Lumb, Doherty, Tull

Next game is against TEM, at Elgar on Saturday at 2:00.
