Women’s M2S v Mentone (R6)
A top of the table stoush and what do you know we are hunting around under rocks to find players? Not an ideal lead-in but once we hit the ground we were up for the challenge. Mentone put the pressure on early and scored through an unlucky deflection. But as the half continued Kew gradually started to take control of the game and put the pressure back onto Mentone.
Through hard work the girls won a short corner and as the coaching staff prayed for a goal to scare Mentone, Mel P stood up to the line and slotted it through. The first goal they have conceded for the season. Game on! The Kew girls had come to win and with some sterling defensive pressure and stretching runs in attack it was a great game to watch.
At half time, it was 1-2 and the team had work hard and some very tired players came to the bench. But the competitive spirit would drag there bodies through the second half. We didn’t start the best letting in a goal very early to go 3-1 down. But our secret weapon code named “Wilson” rocked up at half time and went straight to the forward line to start turning the opposition fullbacks and goalie inside out. Numerous runs forward by Kew were unlucky not to be converted after a couple of suss umpiring decisions and stick trap on the goal line behind the goalie. A couple of short corners and a couple of misses, until Jess N stood up to receive and with the wind up in full motion powered the ball past all before giving them a chance to react. Kew back in the game 3-2 down.
The competition was fierce and a little rough by the opposition, but Kew just wanting to play hockey kept pushing to the point where Wilson had 2 full backs hacking her legs, stick and anything else they could reach while running into the D only to confronted by a goalie with a leg sticking out far enough to trip her over. After all that, the umpires decided that no free was required. Needless to say, a few choice words where muttered in the Kew bench. Unfortunately Mentone scored again to run out winners 4-2. But we can’t wait to meet them in the return leg, bring it on!
Fantastic game by all the girls, they all gave 100% and played their hearts out. Thanks to Ros, Megan & Steph C for filling in.
