Women’s SL2 v Yarra (R6)
3-2 win
Well done team. Nearly everyone there on time. Unfortunately not the umpires.
The lovely surprise was Emma Morrow making her State League debut! This set a great vibe for the team and the pre match banter was highly motivated and definitely hockey orientated.
As has become the norm our first 10 minutes was hard and fast. Opportunities were created and narrowly missed by Lisa, Sall and Kirsten. A corner was forced and the Kew girls were in on the pads for a conversion. 1-0.
Phoebe looked solid in defence, and with Brooke back(still debateable if she should have been!!) the Yarra girls were finding it hard to find their attacking circle.
Continual pressure and sheer pace created some more right side attacks, and finally a right side cross was smashed and a back stick deflection eventuated. 2-0 up at half time.
Possibly we got a little ahead of ourselves. As known to most, 2-0 is the most difficult lead to defend. And sure enough, within 5 minutes, the scores were even.
It took a while to regain control of the game. Lisa cleverly managed to get a Yarra girl sent off and this imbalance allowed the team to force another corner. Left corner straight hit. 3-2 to Kew.
With 5 minutes to go, the most skilful side was placed on the field to ‘tie up’ the ball. Kirsten was in her element and Kew defended this marginal lead.
Still work to be done for 70 minutes of dominant hockey.
