u17 Round 7 Cumber Report
Kew 4-0 DoncasterKew recorded their first win for the season in emphatic style, beating cellar-dweller Doncaster at Elgar Park on Friday night. It was a game dominated by the ‘Cumbers from start to finish and men wearing blue and white duly added 3 points to their tally, bringing them closer to the rest of the competition on the ladder.
The first half was one with copious amounts of missed chances for Kew, as they dominated possession for the half. The first passage of play summed up the trend for the rest of the game perfectly. After stringing together a series of crisp passes, Damien Mueller broke up the sideline and through the D, only to see his shot narrowly miss the goal. Doncaster’s defence were under extreme pressure throughout the half and struggled to get the ball above the half line. When they did, their attacks were short lived as Kew’s defence constantly stood up and intercepted their forward pushes. After many missed chances and near misses, Michael Doherty dispatched the ball into the bottom of the net from a well executed penalty corner, putting Kew up 1-0. The Doncaster players began to drop their heads but Kew weren’t able to make them pay and the halftime whistle blew with the score at only 1-0.
As both teams took their positions for the second half, the game was well and truly up for grabs. Even thought they were only one goal down, Doncaster came out in the second half like a team consigned to defeat, even though they were only a goal down. Their hopes of victory were dealt a severe blow when Jon Hyatt notched his first of the game and Kew’s second shortly after the resumption. Again Kew began to dominate in nearly every facet of the game. A defensive error, which ultimately gifted Doncaster a short corner, gave them an opportunity to get back in the game with 11 minutes remaining. They couldn’t convert and Kew put another nail in the coffin with their third goal of the evening. The game was well and truly put beyond any doubt when Damien Mueller scored his second of the evening. Doncaster had a few late chances to score a consolation goal, but were unable to convert and the win was capped off with a resounding rendition of the Kew theme song after the final whistle.
After coming off their first win of the season, Kew are poised to face Altona at Altona this Friday. It shapes as a good game, where either side could come away with the points. Both will be desperate to do just that.
