Women’s Vets B v Essendon (R9)

Round 9 – Women’s Vets B

Kew (0) vs Essendon (2)

Kew came up against Essendon this week, in a game notable for its dodgy umpiring as much as the on field action.

We didn’t start out at our best this week, and Cathie, donning the pads for the first time ever to fill in for our regular goalie, was put under a bit of pressure in the first half but nevertheless put in a courageous effort and managed to keep the score down to 2 nil at half time.  The damage would have been worse if not for a great performance from Barb in the backline who managed to clear one after another as the ball entered the danger zone.

After copping the rough end of one of the worst umpiring decisions ever experienced in our combined years on and off the field (and lets face it, this is a Vets team – there are a quite a lot of years between us!) spirits were a bit subdued a the break.  It was clear, though, that despite Essendon having a couple of hot shots who were breaking through our defences, with a bit more teamwork we could do better.

We took the field with determination to put the first half behind us and make a fresh start, and at last things started to come together.  A brilliant strike of a short corner by Carolyn that just clipped the post came about as close to a goal as you can get without actually changing the scoreboard, and there was plenty more action up our end as the match progressed.  Although we didn’t manage to score in the second half, neither did our opposition, which showed that we can hold our own in this competition when we put our mind to it.Â
