Men’s M1W v Brunswick (R10)
With more ‘special guest star appearances’ over the last 6 weeks than Melrose Place, the question is whether we should be changing our name from the Sopranos! This week’s special guest appearances were from Steve “Whitey” White and Matt “the nice one” Cleave. Both were making their Soprano debut and did so in style.
As has become the norm, the Sopranos started slowly after a pretty ordinary warm up. The ‘wicks’ got away to a one goal lead before the Sopranos were spurred into action. Some blistering moves down the right side saw Barney get on the end of one and slot it from the top of the circle. The Brunswick boys thought that it was struck from outside and vented their frustration for the remainder of the match. From then on, the mighty Sopranos took control of the midfield, delivering penetrating passes into the circle for both Cleaves. Unfortunately only Simon was able to convert, but clearly the “wicks” were troubled by the brother combo.
Whitey at left half was as solid as a rock, stopping their dangerous attacks and setting up some dangerous counter attacks for the likes of Judas Watts and Hillsy on the left forward line.
The Sopranos returned to the winners circle with a convincing 4 – 1 victory and a much needed week off to rest some weary bones and heal some wounded muscles. Hopefully after the break the usual cast will have returned from their mid-season hiatus!
