Women’s Vets B v Waverley
Kew 2 vs Waverley 1
Being the first day of school holidays we were missing a few Mums as we rolled up to Waverley Hockey Club, including three key defenders. However the thought that the home team might also be finding themselves in a similar position kept our hopes alive. We even had a small but enthusiastic cheer squad for this game, and we didn’t want to disappoint them!
We soon spotted the couple of navy blue shirts to look out for, and from the opening minutes felt like we were in with a chance this week. The game started out as a fairly even competition, until Trish, playing out on the wing for a change, took a beautiful pass from Felicity, neatly weaved her way around a couple of defenders and slammed in a lovely clean hit from just inside the circle.
Next it was Janie’s turn to shine. A few minutes before the end of the first half our relative newcomer put in another great shot to score her maiden goal for Kew…and with a hit like that we can be confident it won’t be her last. Two nil at the break and we were feeling good.
A very determined Waverley took the field in the second half, against what we must confess was a slightly flagging Kew. Our defenders were put under constant pressure, and ten minutes into the second half we conceded a goal bringing the score to 2 -1. Things were looking dicey for awhile as our opposition threw everything they had at us, but we managed to hang on until the final whistle blew.
An enthusiastic rendition of the Kew club song filled the night air and we headed off to celebrate. It might not be about whether you win or lose, but it was great to take away a positive result as we head into the midseason break.
