Women’s PB v Hawthorn (R12)

MUST WIN GAME

As far as games go this year, this was the most important.  To win this game could help avoid relegation.  So the big guns were brought in.  Lisa Stewart and Katie James.  The theme for the day, ‘FRIENDLY PASSES’; make a pass that you would like to receive.  Flat and fast.

The skills that Kew displayed in the opening minutes of the game were exceptional.  Not a pass or trap was missed.  A corner was forced within the first minute of the game.  A slight mistrap at the top led to a ‘Ben Chipper Johnson’ style drag and hit from the top…well done to Jess Evans to finish it off.  1-0.  More exciting pressure from Kew.  A wonderful carry from Charlotte and then cross from right wing for the centre forward to deflect in. 2-0.  More pressure.  So exciting for the 5 people watching…  then a back stick goal from the centre forward.  3-0.

A couple more in the crowd…time to bring out the secret weapon.  Katie James drag flick from the top…so good.  4-0.

Our right half found herself overlapping and hitting a great goal from close to the top…5-0.  It felt like Kew were unstoppable.  Then the best goal of the game.  A beautiful passage of play from centre to out wide to Charlotte who timed her run down the wing to perfection to draw the defenders and then lay a flat, hard cross for left wing, Mel to put in.  Well done for your first of the season!!  6-0 at half time.

The discussion at half time was about how well skills were being executed.  This stemmed from the backline where Chels and Ally really did time their passes perfectly.  Our aim for the second half was to double our score.

Perhaps the thrill of the first half took its toll.   We did not start all that hard.  It did seem as though the umpires deemed it necessary to be particularly harsh on the big guns…poor Lisa and Katie did not get a free for the half.

Another amazing cross into the circle for Vanessa to finish off. 7-0.  Kew’s corners this week were a stark contrast to last week.  They were great.  Straight hit converted. 8-0.  And now a minor hiccup.  Hawthorn got a corner and straight hit one in.  Bugger 8-1.  Well done to Issy though who continued placed strong pressure on their right attack

Mel Reid was unfortunate to wear a hit in the ankle.  Down to 10 players.  This did not stop Kew though and Jess Evans scored her second for the game.  9-1.

Such a good effort to everyone in the team.
