Men’s M1W v RMIT (R13)
Kew 4 def RMIT 1
Goals: S Cleave  2, C McNamara 1, B Allen 1Â
Captain Lachie seems to have two goals this year. The first is the obvious one – and that is to win a Premiership. The second goal appears to be that we need a special guest appearance by a Kew Legend each week. This week’s special guest star again increased the average age, but we were all ecstatic to have the services of Joey Hassell.
The mighty Sopranos started well, controlling the ball with some silky stick-to-stick passing that cut the defence to shreds. Barney on the right wing was in scintillating form that saw circle penetration after circle penetration. Unfortunately we were only able to convert two of the numerous opportunities into goals leaving Clancy to pull his (red) hair out. The usual tactic of “get it to Cleavie†was still working as he converted two goals, which was not a bad return considering he was hobbling around on one leg.
Unfortunately we lost Joey to the curse of the Right Half. This dreaded curse has now claimed two good calf muscles in two weeks inside the first few minutes of the game. Look out whoever plays there next week – you could be next…
The second half started with a bang – the mighty Sopranos caught the RMIT students napping and had a goal from the restart inside 15 seconds. 3 – 0 up and the Sopranos put the cue in the rack and decided to coast to victory. Unfortunately the RMIT team thought that they had a chance and began to build the pressure on the Soprano defence. Eventually they slotted one past a sprawling Fitzy who had made some brilliant saves but could just not handle being so outnumbered on this occasion. This again spurred the Cumbers and another moment of ‘Barney Brilliance’ awaited as he took a shot from the right base line, slipping it between the post and the left ear of the keeper. It really was a sensational goal – ask Barney, he will be more than happy to tell you about it…
Another great team performance saw the mighty Sopranos post a comfortable win. Special thanks to Steve White who made an encore performance and did not disappoint in his second appearance at left half.
