Men’s M1W v Yarra (R14)

Significant Potential Incident on Sunday afternoon at Yarra Valley

The SPI or significant potential incident is an important safety statistic which is defined as an incident without actual consequences where the coordinates of probability and potential consequence meet in the higher or medium risk area. The SPI occurred on a sunny Sunday afternoon as 3rd placed Kew met bottom side Yarra. The SPI had nothing to do with the game after the Sopranos beat bottom side Yarra 4-0 (more on the actual game shortly).

Post game, the Sopranos follow a well established routine tested over many years. First, the warm down which consists of grabbing our gear and walking off the field. This may also involve a warm-down jog but is not essential. The second, more important step is the gathering around the esky to dissect the game and work out how much are beers and is it 3 for best? On Sunday afternoon, the esky had decided that we would do the right thing and support Yarra’s fundraising efforts by buying beers over the counter at the kiosk. This was all good and well in theory but unfortunately the kiosk wasn’t open and the esky was sitting back in Richmond! After a brief discussion, the decision was made to decamp to the Harp. Crisis averted. An incident review committee has been established to ensure adequate controls are put in place to avoid future similar incidents.

The pre-game focus was on sharp ball movement, getting the ball around the back and generating attacking short corners. With Barney and Hillsy showing pace out wide, Cleavey a significant presence inside and Clance & Haydos providing drive through the wing halves, the Sopranos were controlling the game. With the pre-game message of generating corners front of mind, saw the Sopranos convert two early chances – the first from Hillsy via a variation from the spot and second from Cleavey with a direct hit. Tunga, Yabba and Cuz were rock-solid at the back and providing plenty of turnovers and allowing quick breakaways. One such turnover saw quick ball movement with Cleavey finishing off for his second. Half-time 3-0. The second half was a scrappy affair with the Yarra keeper making some good saves and the hangovers starting to kick-in. With Fitzy making some good saves and some robust defending, Yarra were kept off the scoreboard. After some interesting passing behind the Yarra keeper between Charlie and Cleavey, the Sopranos scored their 4th and final goal in the final minutes.
