Men’s Metro 1 East v Greensborough (R15)

The previous week saw a debilitated 5ths side journey to the outskirts of civilisation and like the frontiersman during the founding days of the American heartland found them besieged on all sides by ‘injuns’ dressed in the war colours of the Casey Cannons. The eight Kewtonians weathered the storm that was reminiscent of Custers Last Stand and succumbed to an 0-8 loss. If anything it helped address some defence issues.

This week the defence of Fortress Elgar was at the forefront of the Cumbers minds as the green and white army attacked from the north. The blue and white held sway over the northern invaders and had the luxury of early dominance that culminated in an early strike that was unfortunately disallowed. Nevertheless, KEW kept pressing the invaders back and were soon rewarded with their efforts through Scott Roberts.

Steven Roberts received a wide pass in the corner and drove along the baseline for a deft pass to the spot where Scott opened the scoring much to the delight of the team who were desperate for their second victory of the season. Ten minutes later the advantage was doubled.

Lalor McMahon received a quick pass from Marcus Keam, quickly turning his close marking opponent inside out for a rapid shot from the top of the D. This had the keeper on the back foot and helpless to defend. Half time soon followed with KEW leading 2-0 – a rarity to say the least.

The Cumbers were reminded that the game was still yet to be won and everyone steeled themselves to fight it out to the very end. KEW held the better of possession for the half and looked dangerous around the 25 but could not increase their advantage. Greensborough fought hard at the end and earned a penalty corner at the death and full time being blown. A KEW infringement gave the invaders a second chance after the siren and despite desperate efforts from the valiant Kewtonians could not hold onto their clean sheet.

Round 16 is a difficult task in Dandenong, but the recent result should help instill confidence in the 5ths ability.

Full time: 2-1
Goals: Scott Roberts, Lalor McMahon
