Men’s M1W v Greenborough (R17)

The equation going into the match was simple- win and we would book ourselves a finals berth.

In the clubroom prior to the match, Clance advised that he would be appearing in the Millionaires Hot Seat on Monday night and he qualified for the show due to his red hair and love of Collingwood. We will all be watching with anticipation. Let’s hope that he doesn’t get a science or maths question because he has vowed to destroy the set and set fire to any couches in the studio.

Greensborough always give you a tough match and this game was no exception. The first half was an even battle. The curse of the post struck again with two posts in the first half (8 posts in the last 4 games but who is counting!). Defensive penalty corners produce an opportunity for humor and there was some witty exchanges when Tunga had his left foot smashed and Clance announced that he had it covered defending the net. A penalty stroke was denied. Jim Allen was promising in his come back game with several sorties down the right flank. Pete Dabner was initially reluctant to start at left back because Clance was at left half but their love affair continued and Pete was only chastised on three occasions. There was even a passionate embrace between the two at one stage as Clance tried to calm his teammate down. Fitzy produced a couple of excellent saves around the face of goal that kept us in the match. Cleavy created several good scoring opportunities but as a team we turned the ball over too often to control the game.

It was noted that Hillsy did not produce the traditional tupperware box of lollies at half time.

Despite Greensborough loosing one of their players through a Clancy induced yellow card, the boys from the Burra managed to force their way forward and score a scrambled goal. Crispy fried chicken in the centre provided them with many offensive thrusts and unfortunately we tried to play through him on too many occasions and the wiry old grey haired fox was too cunning and he simply picked us off. Clance had one blistering attack down the right hand side which should have yielded a better result up front and it was frustrating that we didn’t earn a penalty corner for the entire second half and we defended three or four.

The equation for Round 18 is again simple – win against the top side TEM and secure a place in the top four. Loose or draw and we can stay at the Harp a little longer to lament our opportunities in 2009. The Sopranos are not ready to end the season without a fight.

FINAL SCORE: Greensborough 1 Kew 0
