Women’s M2S v StkPH (R17)

Well after the rivalry round last weekend the team had to set their sights on putting away the Saints this weekend. Well the game got started, but I wouldn’t really say that we did. After 10 minutes of a warm up, we found a bit of space and started to weave around these ladies (didn’t want to get to close to avoid hack tackles) and show a bit of form.

Jess W started us off with a caving run into the D, dodge the full back for a firm push straight past the goalie. From there it was all Kew with a deft run along the base line with a pass to spot which then bounced off everyone in the area before Bree found some space to slot it away. Then Wilson unleashed with bolt from the top that gave the goalie no chance and just to mix it up later dragged the defenders to the left for a casual back stick flick into the goals. Somewhere in-between all that poor Kelly coped the Goalies stick right in the head, luckily the goalie quickly apologised or there would have been a bit of a rumble at the old Fortress.

Back to the game and something happened that brings a tear to a coaches eye, a number of passes all linked up from the half line ending up with Bree running into the D, committing the goalie, then casually passes it to the post where Mel H was waiting to slap it into the back of the net. Beautiful! With all that happening half time couldn’t have come soon enough for the Saints.

Unfortunately we went to sleep a bit in the second half, so time to discuss some other things that happened in the game. We had the first umpire with beyond 20/20 vision, he was calling “5 yards” on Kew up close, from the base line and I swear he even did it upside down. A  big thanks from the team goes to Sue Clements for playing in goals for us this week, we are sorry we didn’t manage to give you a clean sheet this week. But I did see Anna making sure Mum was well taken care of with some great traps and tackles right in front of goals.

For a while it didn’t look like we were going to trouble the scorers, but again Mel H popped up on the post to put away her second. All done and dusted Kew 6 – Powerhouse 1. Thanks also to Fi Picket for playing with us this weekend, reliable as ever across the back line.
The girls are just outside of the 4 and need to win next week to keep their chances alive to sneak into the finals. Go the Doggies!
