Women’s M2S v TEMs (R18)
This round the Kew ladies helped support TEMS Breast Cancer Awareness weekend through a kind donation and wore pink ribbons that Avis tells me she wove herself. (Is there anything this lady can’t do) Fantastic effort by the TEMS club. Well last round for the season and it came down to this, if the Bourgh decided to lose and we win, were in. (Bribery was out of the question and we don’t have tanking issues in Hockey unlike other sports Mr. Demetriou).
Well that sounds simple enough and everyone should be fired up for this one……and moving onto the second half. All players had arrived and the sick players were alive and given that the score line was 0-0 we were still in with a chance. We certainly looked more cohesive as a team in the second half and superior fitness (is this true ladies?) started to take over as we locked the ball in to our attacking half and were rewarded with a number of short corners. They weren’t quite working as well as normal and a very determined Full back kept getting in front of goalie and trapping it. So Anna had a brilliant idea, she thought if she just slightly topped the ball so that it bounced a little bit it would deceive the full back. Well the coach looked confused as he tried to understand the brilliance of this plan.
Anyway, the pass came out….Anna traps…… steps forward and with precision that an eye surgeon could only dream of hits the ball on the correct 56 degree down angle (she told us the angle required) to provide enough bounce and speed to deceive all that stood in front of the goal. Sweet 1-0. Now Isabelle had a different school of thought, basically power and intimidation (fear factor). Again the coach looked confused as if he was adding 2 & 2, so Issy thought an example might help. So she took advantage of a lose ball in the D and proceeded with a wind up that a full back would be proud of and timed this ball perfectly into a defenders foot. OOOOwwwww!
After the demonstration it was time to see if it worked and after a beautiful lead up play off a turn-over in defence which lead to a Kew fast break and a beautiful receive from Issy in the D she set herself, and as the wind up started the TEMS players stayed back and then crack the ball flew into the back board and rebound back up to the half line. 2-0. The game finished up 2-1. Unfortunately we missed out on the finals this year by goal difference alone, but I would like to congratulate the girls on a fantastic effort after stepping up from Metro 3 last year.
