Men’s PB v Southern (EF)

KEW 4 – Southern 5

A thrashing of Waverley (7-1) the week before gave the PB boys every chance to play finals. Unfortunately things did not go to script and Southern beat Camberwell to edge a point in front of us. It was all down to Essendon (second last) to beat Greenborough (third). News filtered through that Greensborough had taken a 2-0 lead early but the bombers clawed their way back for a 4-4 draw and KEW snuck into the final by a point.

As demonstrated during the year with two 2-1 Victories over Southern, the game was going to be hard fought and close. We knew that having a limited bench against the army of Southern players that showed up that we needed a good start. 3-1 up a half time after two well executed Matthew Morrows and some brilliant anti-skill in the circle beating the keeping meant KEW went into the break fired up. Unfortunately in the end Southern had too much run and got on top in the second half. Alders beat the keeper with a beautiful corner hit to make it 4-4 with 5 minutes to go but we were run off our legs and Southern snuck home 5-4.

After the initial disappointment the team was quite up beat with many believing it was one of the better games we had played all year. Really positive signs that the team did not drop their heads and fought out the game until the end.
