Men’s PE v MCC (EF)
Kew 3 defeated MCC 1
It has often been said that pressure can determine one’s actions. Given that The Mighty fours had no pressure on Elimination Final Day, perhaps that is why they decided to play their best game of the year when it counted most.
Up until Monday morning, the Kew Boys were placed 6th on the ladder, a fair result given the poor result in round 18 when Footscray destroyed them 1 – 4.
Then came the phone call from coach Kieren to the boys that Hockey Victoria had reversed a result from Round 15 against Yarra Valley for playing a SL2 player, a strange feeling went thru all the boys minds given that is was the last game for this team for over half of them, due to retirements, overseas and interstate postings.
Tuesday night training was as relaxed as ever, as was the warm up on game day, kicking the yellow Sherin around Melbourne High and taking speckies over one another.
MCC, fielding 5 recent State League 1 players, were disgusted in this pre game banter and looked down the “rat pack” like Mrs Doubtfire! Keep in mind that 17 goals had been scored between the two teams in the previous two encounters.
Come game time, MCC wished they were at the movies, a couple of minutes in young Roberts was struck by a flick and rushed to hospital, say no more – The Kew Boys were stung into action. A David Kahanoff Bullet from a short corner followed by the “yell from hell” in front of the huge Kew crowd and the score was 1 – 0 at the intermission.
The Kew Boys knew that MCC would come out angry and would leaving nothing in the Tank. But The Earl Dan Shardlow decided that he would place the ball between the posts and the score was 2 -1. MCC quickly put one in and decided that physical was the way to travel – a bad move in hindsight. Strong defence from Cracka, Nails, Kieren, Kim and Kahanoff of the D variety enabled Dan, Chang of the S variety, Ballarat’s own Burkey and Kouta #43 to control the ball up forward.
Another great field goal from The Earl made it 3 – 1 to The Kew Boys and MCC decided it was time to order popcorn and have a quite nite in.
A big thank you to the amazing Kew crowd that was “MASSIVE”.
Next week it is a Kew v. Doncaster Semi Final – 3.30 pm @ DONCASTER. Please come and support us and let us entertain you!
