Mens M1W v Greensborough (R1)

Men’s 5s – Saturday 12.30pm vs Greensborough

“Pass to that person over there… you know…. him!”

I guess there are many teams in the world in which the core playing group have played together for many years. Where most of the members just KNOW where the ball/puck/baton/small fluffy dice is going to suddenly appear, so they can swoop on it & score again. Teams where not only are first names, but nicknames are as entrenched as Kylie’s inability to hit even a single note.

The Metro 1 team is outstandingly devoid of any of these; I’m guessing that most of us have never played together. I did learn that Greg was in fact not Greg but James. No wonder he never passed it to me. I did know Nick Reid, because he very kindly introduced himself to me. And I knew the other veteran, Gerry, who was co-opted in to captain this merry band of misfits. 2 players playing their first games in years; Aussi breaking all previous time out of the sport records having missed 30 consecutive seasons! You’ll notice I didn’t call him Tim. Too hard having two of them on the field at once. So I democratically renamed him to avoid any future verbal entanglements. Fortunately we’d already renamed one of the 2 James’, so that conflict was nipped in the bud.

So, those world weary Hockey buffs will know that one of 2 scenarios was likely to occur at game 1; Demolition of the good guys (us), or a spirited, very close match with the
good guys winning by a single goal in the dying seconds. The fairy tale was not to be, however. a 9-2 slaughtering it was. We was thumped. I wonder what the hardened hockey hacks think will happen next week? I hope to remember a few more names.

I hope I can finally trap that bloody ball. Until next week, I bid y’all a happy Anzac weekend.

Tim “The great pretender” M (The only Tim in the team)
