Mens M2E v Monash (R1)

Men’s 6s – Sunday 2pm vs Monash

The Soprano’s 2010 campaign kicked off in fine form with a 6-0 thrashing of Monash.

Some clever recruiting over the off-season has seen the Soprano’s average age drop significantly as we welcomed youngsters Gil Hassel and Will Harty for their first senior games and both showed plenty to suggest they won’t be out of place. Gil celebrated with a goal whilst Will almost scored with a great onetime effort that just sailed wide of the RHS upright.

Unsurprisingly, the Sopranos were forced to play most of the game with only one on the bench after an early calf injury – somewhat surprisingly, it wasn’t Jim Allen’s but Tim Watts’ calf that went into meltdown.

The game started a little scratchily as the Soprano’s showed the effects of a long and arduous preseason. Soon enough, Cleavey put one away to kick off his chase for back-to-back Peter Osmonds. As Clance implored the forwards to work harder and smarter, Barney and Gil soon added to the tally and we headed into the break 3-0 up. Not long after the restart, Hillsy added to the score and the game began to open up as Monash heads dropped. Cleavey scored twice more to round out the scoring. As usual, Charlie and Lach provided drive through middle, Clance and Jim blanketed their opposition and solid work at the back by the Chief, Yabba and Slacky kept a clean sheet.

All in all, a great start to the season and with some regulars to come back, 2010 may be the year that again brings the Sopranos the ultimate prize.
