Mens M3N v Powerhouse (R1)

Men’s 7s – Saturday 12.30pm vs Powerhouse St. Kilda

The season doesn’t begin until the first whistle sounds in Round 1.

Melbourne’s relentless winter sun and 27 degree heat was enough of a warm up for the 15 minute ‘pre season’ session.

With 5 of our regular players unavailable, we were pleased to have KEW stalwarts Drew Morrison, Dr Michael and Barney Allen help us field a team and provide a bench –
essential in Round 1.

The whistle sounded and it was very quickly apparent that Sam Lipshut’s new recruits, Matt and David Falla from Greensborough, were valuable additions to the team.
The opposition hardly resembled the team we played last season and gave us a run for our money. The 7ths kept their goalie busy in the first half with several shots at goal and the first two short corners of the game, but their defence was strong and we were not able to convert.

Our defence was just as strong with Matt Falla, Will Hewitt, Bryan MacFarlane, Dr Michael, Jules Hewitt and Andrew Chang all contributing. At half time the score was 0 – 0. In the second half, our legendary goalie, Gumby, was kept much busier than in the first half. The heat and lack of fitness was taking its toll on both sides. Substitutions were frequent. Players were slowing down. A quick break and some sprinting from the younger, fitter legs in the opposition caught us out and a soft goal was scored. Several minutes later, there was a scuffle in the D and, somehow, a second goal was scored.

Our forwards, David, Sam, Roger, Barney, Drew and Alfred were not to be outdone.

Some great passing down the field saw Drew with the ball. It was one on one and their keeper was out of the goal. Drew neatly put the ball into the corner of the net.

With only a few minutes to go, we had more opportunities to score, only to be denied by their defence.

The final whistle blew and it was a disappointing loss to Powerhouse St Kilda 2-1.
