Mens PE v Geelong (R1)
Men’s 4s – Sunday 12.30pm vs Geelong
The first game of the season always brings around challenges – none more-so than the trip down to Geelong. There was the first matter of the coaches’ car breaking down before he even got on the Princes Highway – thanks to a quick pit stop by Giddy he safely made it to the game. A new look Pennant E team with many players having not played the grade or together before would also be a challenge. Then there was the matter of the two key players running late – those being the goal keeper and an inside forward. Needless to say, the game plan was simple – keep it SIMPLE!
The first half was extremely tight with Geelong taking the lead 1-0 before the break. A few adjustments to the line to allow some more dynamic game play put the Cumbers on
top earning KEWs first couple of penalty corners int he game. The second corner tied up the game with some clever work from Kim Schwarz reacting to a rebound to opent the fourths account for 2010.
Geelong replied with a scrappy goal, capitalising on a defensive turnover, but KEW were not done with yet. Great team work through the middle and up the right via the Hyatt
brothers to Schwatta where his cross into the D found Jeremy Selkrig on the spot resulted in a block but Kim followed up his great work and walked the loose ball over the line to again draw the teams even.
KEW were now in the ascendancy and took control of the game. Geelong appeared toothless for over twenty minutes of the second half due to the excellent defensive work
of the entire KEW team. This of course resulted in several key opportunities which ultimately could not be capitalised on by the Blue and the White. A last minute play up the left via Lalor McMahon to Tom Clements looked to have the points wrapped up until we discovered TC left his Tomahawk at home and brought his Sand Wedge instead! I hope the coaches words are still ringing in everyone’s ears – KEEP IT SIMPLE!
The game ended a draw but it was a very good hit out for the first round of the season in a hostile environment. Pennant E will be defending Fortress Elgar on Sunday against Camberwell @ 1pm – come down and cheer us on!
