Mens M2E v MCC (R2)

After starting the 2010 season with a convincing 6-0 win over Monash Uni in Round 1, the Sopranos took on MCC at the newest venue in the competition, Koonung Secondary College. The first half saw Kew get off to a great start with Joe and Gilbert Hassall combining several times down the right hand side of the ground to produce several damaging circle penetrations. Simon Cleave was awarded a penalty stroke which he skilfully completed. Kew dominated the pace of the game and looked dangerous. The score at half time was 4-1

MCC played a more controlled attacking style of game in the second half and they continually got in behind our half line to run with numbers at our fullbacks. Slacky in goals was out numbered on many occasions and an incorrect call from the Chief resulted in the softest goal you will ever see in senior hockey. The Chief was obviously looking at the yellow tennis marking instead of the white hockey markings when he instructed the
defence to let the ball go.

Clance reminder everyone that he can still deliver a stinging verbal spray to all of his team mates but even his rants could not unify the Kew defence as the MCC forwards sensed the fractured defence and took advantage of the basic errors. Against the play, Richard Hills ran hard to retrieve a pass from the left side and he strolled in to score a great running goal. MCC were awarded and successfully converted three penalty strokes to seal the match.

After the game, Charlie reminded the Sopranos of why we play hockey and it was agreed that the disappointing performance in the second half would be quickly eliminated from our memories and we would look forward to next weeks clash against MHSOB at the State Netball Hockey Centre.

Goals: Simon Cleave – 3, Richard Hills – 2, Charlie McNamara – 1
