Mens M3N v Victorian Sikhs (R2)

This was our first game against the Victorian Sikhs so the opposition was an unknown quantity. The pace was slower than last week’s competition, but their accurate passing and teamwork meant the 7ths had to work hard.

We welcomed another guest appearance by the Doctor, and also Lachie Morrison and Barney Allen from the 6ths providing a bench.

The play was evenly matched. The 7ths defended the first two short corners, denying the Sikhs’ attempts to convert. Our attempts to pass the ball down the corridor were continually thwarted. There was some great play by the 7ths and first goal of the match was finally scored at 25 minutes by David Falla. Five minutes later the Sikhs found a gap in our defence and responded with an equaliser and at half time the score was 1-1.

A change in our attacking strategy in the second half was effective in penetrating the opposition’s line of defence resulting in a number of shots at goal. With 10 minutes to go and some fantastic passes up to the D saw Jules Hewitt in possession and a quick Alfred Chan scored our second goal.

The Kew boys were tiring in the final stages of the game. The Sikhs attack didn’t let up with the ball remaining in the opposition’s half. All our defenders were kept busy. Simon Lipshut, looking resplendent in his new uniform, dazzled KEW supporters with his first sprint for the year, testing his hammy. Smitty put his body on the line for the team and took a peppering of shots without complaint (particularly after witnessing Changy’s unconventional interception of a toss).

Full credit to all team members on a hard earned and well deserved 2-1 win.

Special mentions: Lachie Morrison, Barney Allen, Sam Lipshut, Matty Falla, Bryan McFarlane and, in particular, Gumby for yet another high calibre performance.
