Mens PB v Essendon (R2)
We needed a win against Essendon to steady the Pennant B ship. That was the unspoken thought that echoed around the tranquil creek environment where Pennant B held their pre match address. Nick Reid chose the spot. Just behind the St John’s Ambulance Pavilion. It was quiet, serene and peaceful. Untouched by humans. Whilst we all sat on rocks and admired the sound of running water, Chris Harper gave the group the key instructions.
Nick Reid, James Harvey, James Tyson and David Hearn brought in some solid experience to a side that is full of young talent. Whatever recipe book Chris Harper was reading from seemed to have the right ingredients – just don’t forget the Kew Mustard!!
The match was even but the Kew team were able to slot 2 first half goals to take a 2-1 lead into half time. We were on top on the scoreboard but Essendon were playing well and we needed to lift to guarantee the win. The first 15 minutes of the second half was outstanding.
Excellent skills by Matthew Mallinson (AKA The Smiling Assassin) and a sweet goal from Steve Gale got the Kew boys on a roll. When Ash Reid put the second of his two drag flicks in Kew were starting to celebrate. With the score at 4-2 we were quietly confident and when we went to 5-2 we were a $1.05 favorite with Betfair. However, two goals to Essendon in the last 5 minutes gave Kew some very nervous moments with a 5-4 score line. We held our nerve and held on for a hard fought win. To score 5 goals is encouraging and we now have a platform to build on.
When this team plays their best hockey and maintains focus and discipline, the are a genuine contender.
