Mens M3N v Hawthorn (R3)
Hawthorn had won their first two games 6-2 and 5-0, so the Kew boys went out hard and fast on the sound of the whistle. They were looking in fine form with good movement, smart positioning and great passing.Just 7 mins into the play and Matty Falla was seeing stars in the opposition’s half. No, it wasn’t from the sparkles on Macca’s new, glittering gold stick, but from collecting an unorthodox Hawthorn kneecap to the right temple. Unable to see straight and having to adopt the ‘spew’ position, he reluctantly came off the field.
Moments later, Scott Dodds was in possession and let all and sundry know he was finally back from his off season with a decisive field goal, driven smack into the centre of the backboard.
All our midfielders were playing exceptionally well, ensuring we maintained possession and the ball kept moving. David Falla converted two great plays into field goals in 5 minutes.
At half time the score was 3-0.
Sam Lipshut was the first to score a field goal in the second half followed by David Falla’s third and Scott Dodd’s second goal for the game.
With only a few minutes to go, Leigh Fotheringham, just back from his honeymoon, stunned everyone with a 50 metre cross field sprint to trap a long ball. He then scored our 7th and final goal for the game.
Thanks to Barney Allen and Peter Dabner we had three on the interchange bench allowing the effective rotation of players. We also welcomed back Andrew Slack who had been on goalkeeping duties for the 6ths.
Our Great Defenders continually frustrated Hawthorn’s efforts to penetrate the circle.
They did such a good job, that Gumby only got one touch for the game.
Great teamwork, great communication and smart play.
Result: 7-0 (Magnificent!)
