Womens SL2 v Southern United (R3)

There is one team in Women’s SL2, that causes the Kew girls to get just that little bit more nervous than usual… and that team is SUHC (which I still have to say, is the WORST acronym in sport). The combination of nerves, the desire to win and concentration made for a quiet pre-game warm up. You’re never sure what you might be facing out at Moorabbin. We’ve never beaten SUHC and today wasn’t going to be our day.

Two early goals from their high strikers put us somewhat on the back foot. We returned fire eventually, but so did they. 3-1 was not a great start. We gathered ourselves, and with a few smart passes we got back to 3-2. A completely manageable score line.

From there, the game could have gone either way. We were feeling positive and SUHC were playing strong hockey. It was a picture perfect day for hockey really.

The game however, didn’t go our way. The magnetic forces were stronger on the SUHC side of the universe, and we were unable to fight these forces, known as speed, strength, winning 50/50 balls, commitment and fitness. SUHC had all of this over us on the day.

Kudos to them (and I don’t say this often about oppositions).

Both teams had to manage equally with the variables on the day: weather, umpiring decisions, injuries. And unfortunately SUHC managed better.

I must mention the contribution from Ange & Barney Allen, showing their support from the sidelines and putting the SUHC goalkeeper off with her pregnant belly, if only this could have caused her to miss a few of our shots. We were all very pleased to hear both of your lovely voices again – it has been sorely missed around Kew!

Thanks also go to Izzy Hassall for her help and support from the dug out and being a great new part of our team, for now and most definitely for the future.

Let’s look ahead to Sunday ladies.

Score: SUHC 6 def KEW 3
Goals: Kirsten 2; Lisa 1 (I am pretty sure you broke my hand on this high 5 Staz!)
